ACTION 2: LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT The LCA is an environmental management tool used to assess the environmental impacts of a product over the entire life cycle, "from the cradle to grave" by compiling and inventory of relevant inputs and outputs of a product system, evaluation the potential environmental impacts associated with those inputs and outputs, interpreting the results of the inventory analysis and impact assessment phases in relation to the objectives of the study. The LCA will be performed on the production processes of 2 products, a book and magazine.
ACTION 3: DEFINITION OF ENVIRONMENTAL CRITERIA Definition of a set of environmental indicators to be considered and calculated in LCAs and to be included in the software tool to be developed. These indicators should allow appropriate environmental assessment of publishing sector products, be broadly accepted by the scientific community and be understandable for the different agents of publishing sector and for general public.
ACTION 4: GOOD PRACTICES FOR ECODESIGN IN THE PUBLISHING SECTOR Definition of good practices to reduce the environmental impact of publications. This is necessary in order to influence the end result of a book or magazine since the beginning of the process. The contents of the guideline will be flexible enough to be adapted by the designers to their procurer's needs and expectations.
ACTION 5: DEVELOPMENT OF THE SOFTWARE TOOL Development of a specific and user-friendly software tool for identifying and quantifying environmental impacts of publishing sector products during their design phase and before their entry in the market.
ACTION 6: DEMONSTRATION This action aims to develop two different types of publications pilot experiences:
1 best practise guidelines of Ecodesign on the publishing sector
1 book to be determined out of one of ECOS publications (ECOS is an editorial based on the values of economic democracy, self-management, cooperation, social responsibility and respect for the environment).
1 book to be determined of one of CADS annual publications (CADS, Advisory Council for Sustainable Development of Catalonia, advises the Government of Catalonia and promotes participation in the field of environmental policies and sustainable development).
